My first musical encounter that I can remember was when I was about 7 or 8, I got a Sony Walkman with massive headphones for Christmas along with a Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five tape.
By 1984 I was really into to Hip Hop. Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force all grabbed my attention and I decided to form part of the Figure of 8 Breakdancing Crew after seeing a programme on BBC called 'History of Hip Hop'. After watching these Kids dance around I was hooked and spent must of my late primary schools years attempting Swallow Dives.
My love of music continued all the way through to the weekends where my mum & dad would wake all three of us to the sounds of Gwen McCrae, Jean Carn, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, & The Jackson 5, to name but a few. My dad would crank the music up and all 3 of us would have to dance. Who ever pulled off the best moves would get the breakfast first!
After introductions to Hip Hop and Soul I struggled to like anything else my friends at school were into. Me and a friend Louie use to make our own pretend radio shows in his bedroom with two old cassette players, copied tapes from his dads huge record collection and a micro phone.
Around 1989 I remember being up at a youth club seeing a kid in a 'Smiley' T shirt dancing to a track I now know as 'Musical Freedom' by Paul Simpson featuring Adeva belting from the sounds of his mates car stereo. My taste buds for house music were alight and as soon as I was 16/17, my mates and me would hang out of car windows trying to listen to see if we could hear where the next illegal rave was!!!
I'm still really into my Soul, Hip Hop, Jazz, Funk, & House music and have been fortunate enough to dj at a few friends birthdays, the odd night at bar eleven and my every other Sunday slot at the Ropewalk 'Sunday Capers'!
